You Asked....We Answered

This week's You Asked..We Answered question discusses "Can a hospice bill for Nurse Practitioner (NP) visits when the NP is rounding in the hospice inpatient unit (IPU) on behalf of the hospice physician?"

You Asked:

Can a hospice bill for Nurse Practitioner (NP) visits when the NP is rounding in the hospice inpatient unit (IPU) on behalf of the hospice physician?

We Answered:

LeadingAge Ohio contacted Marilyn Jeske, Senior Provider Relations Representative with Palmetto, and she confirmed hospice programs are able to bill for Nurse Practitioner visits when a patient is in a hospice IPU if they are acting on behalf of a physician.  In this case, they are acting as the patient’s attending physician while they are in the IPU.  So if a hospice has not billed for these services in the past 12 months, they would be able to submit adjusted claims, retro for up to one year for all the NP visits completed and documented in the hospice inpatient unit. NP billed services will receive 85% of the current physician fee schedule.
