CDC to Revise Isolation Precaution Guidelines

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is in process of reviewing and updating the 2007 Isolation Precautions guideline for healthcare settings. This guideline, which includes Enhanced Barrier Precautions to prevent the spread of multidrug-resistant organisms, is considered a nationally accepted standard and influences infection prevention and control practices in nursing homes and other healthcare settings. CDC is currently working with the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) to address technical considerations in the Draft Part One: Guideline to Prevent Transmission of Pathogens in Healthcare Settings (2024). The HICPAC workgroup will discuss responses to technical considerations and any suggested revisions during a HICPAC public meeting (date to be determined).

Once the draft is complete, HICPAC will vote to approve the guideline. Once approved, the guideline will be returned to CDC, who will post the guideline to the Federal Register for public comment. Read more about this process by clicking here.
