Sundowners Syndrome affects over 66% of patients with dementia at some time in the course of their illness. It is devastating and one of the two major reasons for institutionalization of patients with dementia. Sundowners Syndrome carries a high risk of morbidity and mortality. This session will explore the nature of Sundowners Syndrome, differentiate it from similar conditions and explore treatment options and management of patients in various settings. State and federal regulatory requirements that may impact treatment options will be discussed. Best practices to improve outcomes for the patient, family and for staff will be shared.
