Elder Care Certification

Anyone who cares for or interacts with older adults will find the Elder Care Certificate Program a wealth of information about issues facing our aging population.  This program will transform the way participants work with elders and enhance their status as caring individuals.  Participants will gain expertise in dealing with the aging population, will have better understanding of the challenges seniors face, and will be better equipped with the interpersonal tools to function as contributing members of a team.

Learning Outcomes

  • As a result of this program, participants will be able to:
  • Identify basic characteristics and implications of aging;
  • Respond appropriately to ethical dilemmas;
  • Describe and practice the "caring presence" communication approach;
  • Define critical thinking and describe its benefits to working with older adults;
  • Describe the skills necessary for excellent customer service

Unique Approach

Changing behaviors requires more than simply holding a workshop and requiring attendance.  The latest research in how we learn best is clear: Changing ingrained habits takes time to apply new skills, reflect on results, and apply the new behaviors again and again.  Here is what makes our approach unique:

  • Four, 1-hour online modules
    • Health and aging
    • Myths and realities of aging
    • Issues of abuse/neglect in the aging population
    • Is there an App for that? Nutrition, Fitness and Aging
  • Interactive 16-hour workshop on dates/time mutually agreeable to your organization and our solution provider
    • Personal Effectiveness
    • Communication and Quality Care
    • Together is better
    • Personal leadership
  • Practicum to demonstrate application of behaviors learned in the program
  • Short quiz after each module
  • Certificate of achievement after successful completion and celebration

Testimonials

"The Elder Care Certificate is an important supplement to many positions within United Church Homes.  It provides a foundational point of reference for the different aspects of aging that each employee will encounter in some way.  We believe that The Ohio State University program is valuable for identifying and supporting the professional development needs of our employees in all departments."~ Rev. Ken Daniel, President & CEO, United Church Homes

"If every employee in our organization were equipped with the skills taught in this program, we would have consistently confident staff who understand the big picture as to why it is important to always listen carefully to the residents and always work as a team.  More staff would fee empowered to make independent decisions, resulting in resident's needs being met more quickly, consistently and confidently." ~Kristen Collins, HR Director, Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber

"The skills gained through participation in the Elder Care Certificate program enhance our staff's awareness and ability to positively impact the lives of those we serve.  Graduates frequently reflect upon their growth and express how their service delivery has been transformed from simply performing routine job duties to truly partnering with the resident to provide quality care, comfort and joy.  This embodies the UCH Vision of bringing Abundant Life to those we serve." ~Scott Slutz, HR Vice President, United Church Homes, Marion
